Deciduous Forest
Deciduous Forests
Deciduous means “falling off or out at a certain season.” This explains why the multi-colored leaves fall off during the winter in a plethora of colors. Most of the deciduous forests in the world have disappeared due to human interference except for in the most remote places in the world. They must also be in temperate and tropical areas.
Climate- The climate is temperate and humid. This is caused by the ample precipitation which is distributed to about 20 to 80 inches of rainfall yearly. This is a rather large variation of rainfall. This is very similar to the climate in a rainforest, but a rain forest gets far more rainfall. The average temperature is about 50-55 degrees F.
The trees must compete against each other to get rain so they grow taller than the others. The shrubs at the bottom don’t get much rain so they use cupped leaves to compensate for the shortage. Another adaptation is that hibernation is a huge adaptation used by most animals in the region for the distinct winter.
There are 5 main levels in a rainforest from top to bottom.
1st-Top canopy where the treetops are.
2nd-A slightly lower level of slightly less mature trees.
3rd-A shrub layer with premature trees and hanging mosses.
4th-Forest floor with grasses and other plants
5th-Ground layer covered in insects and mosses.
Main herbivores- white tailed deer, gray squirrel, and chipmunk.
Main omnivores- raccoon, opossum, skunk, black bear.
Main carnivores- timber wolves, mountain lions, and bobcats.
Questions-
How many layers are there in a rainforest?
What is the kind of temperature that you would expect in a deciduous forest?Ex. Cold, hot temperate, etc.
About what is the average rainfall in a deciduous forest?
About what is the average temperature in this biome?{Number}
